Soviet Mountaineer Officer 1942 (part 2)

I have finished painting the face, the hardest part of this project. I spent around 30 hours for painting and repainted some areas a few times until I satisfied with the result, such as rosy cheeks and 5 o'clock shadow. In my opinion, face is the most important part to express the feeling and emotion of your project through their facial expression, so I give priority on painting this part quite a lot than the others.
I studied the works of two masters in painting bust "Kirill Kanaev" and "Sang Eon Lee" (They are the best bust painter in my opinion. Their works is truly incredible, really impressive and flawless. You can see some tutorials for painting bust by Sang Eon Lee in his website HERE) In order to understand about the skin color, details on the face and also light and shadow on their works. I tried to depict a lifelike appearance on my project which is the most important thing I have learned from their works, but It's quite difficult when I tried to paint it by myself. :) However, even the result was not good as I expected especially on the skin tones, I'm still happy that I did paint it with the best I could and hope I will paint it better next time. :)

ผมทำสีในส่วนของใบหน้าเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้วครับ เป็นส่วนที่ยากที่สุดของงานชิ้นนี้ และผมใช้เวลาไปกว่า 30 ชั่วโมงในการเพนท์รวมถึงแก้ไขในส่วนต่างๆจนได้ผลลัพท์ที่พอใจ โดยเฉพาะตรงบริเวณแก้มที่อยากให้ดูมีสีเลือดฝาดกับตรงส่วนของหนวดเคราที่ใช้เวลาในการแก้ไขไปมากพอสมควรครับ เนื่องจากส่วนตัวแล้วคิดว่าใบหน้าเป็นส่วนที่สำคัญที่สุด เพราะสามารถสื่อถึงอารมณ์และความรู้สึกที่เกิดขึ้นบนชิ้นงานของเรา ผ่านออกมาทางการแสดงออกของสีหน้าและแววตา ผมจึงค่อนข้างให้ความสำคัญในการทำสีของส่วนนี้ และใช้เวลามากกว่าส่วนอื่นๆครับ
และเนื่องจากผมยังไม่เคยทำสีงานในมาตราส่วนนี้มาก่อน ซึ่งจะมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าขนาดที่ผมคุ้นเคยอยู่มาก ผมจึงต้องลองศึกษาการทำงานประเภทนี้ จากผลงานของคนที่ผมคิดว่าโดดเด่นที่สุดในการเพนท์งานประเภทบัสท์สองท่าน คือ Kirill Kanaev และ Sang Eon Lee ครับ ผลงานของทั้งสองท่านนี้ โดดเด่นทั้งในเรื่องของการให้สี แสง เงา รวมไปถึงการแสดงออกของอารมณ์และความรู้สึกที่เกิดขึ้นภายในชิ้นงานครับ ซึ่งทำให้ผลงานของทั้งสองท่านดูมีความสมจริงมากครับ (ลองเข้าไปดูขั้นตอนการเพนท์งานของ Sang Eon Lee ได้ตรงนี้ครับ HERE ) และจากการที่ผมได้ลองศึกษาดู ทำให้พอจะเข้าใจถึงการให้แสงเงาบนใบหน้า และการเก็บรายละเอียดต่างๆ แล้วจึงลองนำมาปรับใช้บนผลงานของตัวเอง แต่การดูและทำความเข้าใจกับการลงมือทำจริงในแบบที่ตัวเองเข้าใจ มันแตกต่างกันพอสมควรครับ :) ผลที่ได้จึงยังไม่พอใจนัก โดนเฉพาะเรื่องของโทนสีผิวที่ดูจะคล้ำไปหน่อย แต่ก็ถือว่าเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นที่ดีและจะพยายามปรับปรุงให้ดียิ่งขึ้นในงานชิ้นต่อๆไปครับ 

In the pictures below, I show you the colors I used for painting the skin and the mixed colors on my wet palette. The main colors for the skin came from Vallejo Panzer Aces; Highlights Flesh, Flesh Base, Shadows Flesh with Vallejo Model Color (VMC) Burnt Cad. Red for deep shadow. I also mixed in every shadows color with a bit of Reflective Green (VMC). The lips and rosy cheeks was mixed from highlights color with Red (VMC) and 5 o'clock shadow (beard) also mixed from highlights color with German Cam. Black Brown (VMC). 

ส่วนด้านล่างนี้เป็นภาพของสีที่ผมใช้ในการเพนท์สีผิว และสีที่ผสมไล่น้ำหนักแล้วบนจานสีครับ ซึ่งสีหลักๆที่ใช้จะเป็นสีของ Vallejo Panzer Aces ครับ มีสามสีคือ Highlights Flesh, Flesh Base และ Shadows Flesh ร่วมกับสี Vallejo Model Color (VMC) Burnt Cad. Red ไว้สำหรับเป็นสีของเงามืด ซึ่งสีของเงาในแต่ละชั้นนั้น ผมจะผสมสี Reflective Green (VMC) ลงไปเล็กน้อยเพื่อทอนความสดของสีครับ ส่วนสีของริมฝีปากจะใช้การผสมจากสีของไฮไลท์ในแต่ละชั้น ผสมกับ Red (VMC) ครับ นอกจากนี้สีไฮไลท์ยังเอาไว้ผสมกับ German Cam. Black Brown (VMC) เพื่อใช้เป็นสีของหนวดเคราด้วยครับ

In addition to painting the Russian Mountaineer bust, I also have finished construction of two miniatures and their base; Raven Guard Assault Marine & Night Lords Night Raptor. They are going to be the next minis for SMOD project. I will post more pics of each project soon :)

นอกเหนือจากการทำสี Russian Mountaineer bust ช่วงที่ผ่านมาผมยังได้ทำงานเอาไว้อีกสองชิ้น และเสร็จในส่วนของการประกอบและทำฐานแล้ว เหลือแค่การนำมาทำสีครับ คือ Raven Guard Assault Marine และ Night Lords Night Raptor ซึ่งทั้งสองตัวนี้ทำเตรียมเอาไว้สำหรับโครงการ SMOD ตัวถัดไป และจะนำภาพความคืบหน้าของแต่ละตัวมาลงอีกทีครับ :)

Soviet Mountaineer Officer 1942 (part 1)

I haven't finished military or historical subject for almost three years. I did it once on this post [here] but it's still waiting on the shelf with only painted face. After three years of learning and using acrylic paint, I finished more than 20 projects but all of it was Sci-Fi & Fantasy subject. In my opinion, it's quite different for painting on both type of model, Military & Historical is based on realistic and history but Sci-Fi & Fantasy is (can) based on your imagination (maybe this is the reason why I really enjoyed with painting Sci-Fi & Fantasy after doing military & historical model for around 20 years). Therefore I really want to know what is it going to look like when painted on military or historical subject, also in order to compare with my earlier work.

This is a beautifully sculpted bust in 1/10 scale from Young Miniatures. I decided to paint bust because I want to try with a new thing that I never did before (Historical bust) and I want to do it for a long time, also a big scale will be easy to see any mistake which is great for testing my experience of using acrylic paint. :)  I'll post pics of the progress soon. เป็นเวลากว่าสามปีที่ผมไม่ได้ทำงานในแนวทหารเสร็จเป็นชิ้นเป็นอันเลย ผมเคยนำบางงานมาทำและลงเอาไว้ [ที่นี่] แต่สุดท้ายก็ทิ้งเอาไว้ในตู้และเสร็จเพียงแค่ส่วนของสีผิวเท่านั้น ซึ่งหลังจากที่ผมได้เรียนรู้และลองใช้สีอะครีลิคในการเพนท์มาเป็นเวลาเกือบสามปีนั้น ผมทำงานเสร็จไปแล้ว 20 กว่าชิ้น แต่ทั้งหมดเป็นงานในประเภท Sci-Fi & Fantasy ครับ และผมคิดว่ามันมีความแตกต่างกันพอสมควรในการเพนท์ เมื่อเปรียบเทียบระหว่างโมเดลทั้งสองประเภท เพราะการเพนท์โมเดลประเภท Military & Historical จะอ้างอิงถึงเรื่องของประวัติศาสตร์และความสมจริง ส่วนโมเดลประเภท Sci-Fi & Fantasy นั้นจะมีอิสระในการเพนท์มากกว่าและขึ้นอยู่กับจินตนาการของผู้ทำ ซึ่งบางครั้งสามารถเลือกใช้สีได้ตามใจชอบเลย (นี่คงเป็นเหตุผลให้ผมชอบและสนุกในการทำงานประเภท Sci-Fi & Fantasy ในช่วงที่ผ่านมา หลังจากที่ทำงานสีแบบอยู่ในกรอบมาร่วม 20 ปี) ดังนั้นผมจึงอยากจะรู้ว่าหากนำประสบการณ์ที่ได้จากการใช้สีอะครีลิคในการเพนท์งานประเภท Sci-Fi & Fantasy พอเอามาลองทำลงบนงานประเภท Military & Historical แล้วจะออกมาเป็นเช่นไร รวมถึงจะได้เป็นการเปรียบเทียบกับผลงานก่อนหน้าที่จะหัดใช้สีอะครีลิคด้วยครับ ว่าต่างกันขนาดไหน

และนี่คือโมเดลที่จะนำมาทำครับ เป็นงานประเภท bust หรือรูปปั้นครึ่งตัวของยี่ห้อ Young Miniatures ในขนาด 1/10 ครับ ผมเลือกที่จะทำงานประเภท bust เนื่องจากอยากลองทำสีกับงานที่ไม่เคยทำมาก่อน และผมประทับใจในงานปั้นของยี่ห้อนี้ที่ปั้นงานได้สวยมากๆและอยากลองทำมานานแล้ว อีกอย่างคือการทำสีบนโมเดลขนาดใหญ่แบบนี้จะช่วยให้เห็นถึงข้อผิดพลาดต่างๆได้ง่าย และเหมาะสำหรับนำมาใช้ในการทดสอบถึงประสบการณ์ที่ได้จากการใช้สีอะครีลิคที่ผ่านมาครับ ส่วนผลจะออกมาเช่นไรนั้น จะนำความคืบหน้ามาลงเรื่อยๆครับ  :)

Night Goblin Standard Bearer (Finished)

I really had fun painting this little monster. It took just a couple weeks from start to finish this project, and it's my fastest finished miniatures so far. I hope a finished piece will express feelings and tell the story better than before :)

นี่เป็นงานอีกชิ้นหนึ่งที่ผมรู้สึกสนุกมากในการทำงานครับ และยังใช้เวลาตั้งแต่เริ่มลงมือทำในส่วนต่างๆจนเสร็จสมบูรณ์ในเวลาเพียงแค่สองอาทิตย์กว่าๆ ซึ่งถือว่าเร็วมากๆถ้าเทียบกับงานชิ้นอื่นๆของผมครับ :) หวังว่าชิ้นงานที่ทำสีเสร็จสมบูรณ์แล้ว จะช่วยให้สื่อถึงเรื่องราวที่เกิดขึ้นได้ดีขึ้นกว่าเดิมนะครับ แล้วพบกันใหม่ครับ :)

Night Goblin Standard Bearer (part 2)

For painting the base, it was my first time using a product from Ammo of MIG. I used it for painting the groundwork and it was very easy to use in my opinion. I used three colors; Earth, Damp Earth and Dark Mud, and applied it by randomly tapped these colors on the ground then blended together with turpentine. I finished this part just in a few minutes and after it has dried a few minutes later, the result was really impressive. The colors looks so natural and it can be easily painted over with acrylic paint. Now I'm a big fan of enamel paint. :)
The tree stump and mushrooms was painted with Vallejo acrylic. I used Dark Brown Wash for Green Vehicles and applied it on the tree and the ground in order to emphasis the textures and shadow areas, and it can be easily blended with turpentine as well. I also used Slimy Grime Light to create moss or lichen on the bottom areas. Slimy Grime will be tinted the areas you were applied and it wasn't easy to remove with turpentine, so be careful when using this color. 

สำหรับการทำสีในส่วนของฐาน ในครั้งนี้ผมได้นำผลิตภัณฑ์ของยี่ห้อ Ammo of MIG มาลองใช้เป็นครั้งแรกในการทำสีพื้นดินครับ โดยใช้อยู่สามสีคือ Earth, Damp Earth และ Dark Mud วิธีที่ผมใช้คือจุ่มสีทั้งสามแล้วนำไปป้ายบนพื้นคละๆกัน จากนั้นทาเกลี่ยด้วย turpentine ให้สีเหล่านั้นผสมเข้าด้วยกัน ผมทำแบบนี้สลับสีไปมาและใช้เวลาเพียงไม่กี่นาทีก็ทำสีในส่วนพื้นดินเสร็จ ซึ่งมันง่ายและสะดวกมาก และผลลัพทธ์ที่ได้หลังจากที่สีแห้งแล้วก็น่าพอใจมากครับ เพราะสีของพื้นดินนั้นดูเป็นธรรมชาติโดยที่ไม่ต้องมาผสมสีด้วยตัวเอง อีกอย่างคือสามารถทาทับด้วยสีอะครีลิกเชื้อน้ำอย่าง Vallejo ได้โดยง่ายครับ ตอนนี้ติดใจในการใช้สีอินาเมลมากครับ และคิดว่าในอนาคตคงจะได้ใช้กับงานอื่นๆอีกอย่างแน่นอน :)
ในส่วนของตอไม้และเห็ดที่อยู่รอบๆ ทำสีด้วย Vallejo ก่อนเป็นอันดับแรกครับ แล้วใช้สี Dark Brown Wash for Green Vehicles ของ Ammo เช่นกัน มาวอชอีกทีเพื่อเน้นในรายละเอียดและแสงเงาบนพื้นผิวของตอไม้ครับ นอกจากนี้ผมเพิ่มเติมในส่วนของคราบตะไคร่หรือมอสที่อยู่บริเวณด้่านล่างของตอไม้ ด้วยสี Slimy Grime Light ครับ สีนนี้เวลาทาลงไปแล้วมันจะย้อมสีตรงจุดที่เราทาลงไปให้ออกเขียวๆ ซึ่งจะลบส่วนที่ไม่ต้องการออกได้ยากแม้จะใช้ turpentine ดังนั้นเวลาใช้สีนี้จะต้องระวังหน่อยครับ และใช้พู่กันเล็กๆค่อยๆแต้มเอา

Now I have finished this project and I will post the final pics in a few days :) and here are some clear shots of a finished goblin before it will be glued on the base.
