Step by Step - Making ruined marble temple on plinth Part 1

- Building

This is a first part of making plinth for Black Templars The Emperor's Champion that I posted last week. In this project, I chose to make a plinth with the marble temple scene. Because in my opinion, The Emperor's Champion has an image of knight or warrior and it will be suited with the roman marble temple scene very well and I also want to try to paint marble that I never done before. Then, after I had the concept for my plinth, I started by casting plaster plates from plastic box and it will be used as the marble floor.

After the plaster completely dried, I used a gaming base as a template to mark a socket position and draw it on the plaster with needle.

Then use hand drill to drill holes on the circle mark and make every holes close together as possible, then it will be easy when you cut the circle off with art knife.

After cut and glued the circle plate on gaming base, I sanded the side of both parts (circle plate and inside socket) with sandpaper no.800-1200 respectively, and try to make it has round shape as much as possible. Also, don't forget to test fit between gaming base and socket :)

I used flat nose pliers for breaking plaster plate by clamping and breaking it piece by piece until it has the desired shape. This method will be created rough texture on the fracture rather than cut by art knife or hand saw. Note, placement testing to see the proportion of the scene.

After filled inside the plinth (toothpick box) with plaster (red arrow), I used DAS modelling clay (blue arrow) to make the groundwork and glued plaster plate on top of it. Then put the gaming base in the socket and press it on the clay inside, this clay will be fixed the position of gaming base when it dried. Leave it for several hours and when the clay has dried, it will not stick to the gaming base and you can pull out easily.
Also, in order to make both pieces has the same plain surface. I sanded both pieces at the same time with sandpaper. As you can see in the pics, I glued sandpaper on plywood to make it easy to use then I sanded the surface in circular direction in order to make it has less scratches on the surface.

I used spare plaster plates that I cast at the beginning to decorate the rest of the marble floor. After broke it into small pieces, I choose pieces of plaster that looks suit with the fracture of the floor plate and glued with super glue (Cyanoacrylate) in different levels and overlap from the floor.

I made a marble pillar from Magic-Sculpt, by rolled with a metal box(flat surface). I rubbed on the metal box surface with vaseline first in order to prevent Magic-Sculpt to stick on the box. Then sculpted Magic-Sculpt in cylindrical shape and rolling with metal box on the flat surface (e.g. table top) until it has desired length and round shape.
Note, don't press down on the box too much during the rolling process, Otherwise you will get an oval pillar instead of round pillar. :)

Composition testing. Note, the fracture on top of the pillar made by side cutter

In order to make the marble floor looks more attractive, I carved the plaster with art knife and made it look like cracked and separated floor into overlap and different levels.

I used smashed brick to create debris on the scene by mixing it with white glue and water, then paste it on top and around base of the pillar by using an old paint brush. Also, paste it around the under of the floor plate and between the crack and on some fracture, in order to make it looks like a massive debris under the floor plate.

Lastly, I used Tamiya putty diluted with Mr.Color Thinner (GSI ) and painted on the surface of the floor plate. This method will be filled every small holes on the plaster surface and make it easy to be sanded smooth, in order to create a smooth surface as marble look.
Here are the pictures of finished piece ready for painting :)
