SCAHMS 2014 report part1

Many years ago I found the pictures report from SCAHMS show at armorama.com. That was my first time to know about SCHAMS and I really impressed with the quality of the entries in the show. I saw many well-known artists has entered their works in this show from time to time. So, I've been following this show from armorama since then and told myself that one day if I have a chance, I want to see their works with my own eyes. And my dream has come true on last Saturday :)

หลายปีก่อนผมได้เจอภาพข่าวงานประกวดและแสดงโมเดลที่ชื่อว่า SCAHMS จากเวป armorama.com นั่นเป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมได้รู้จักกับงานประกวดนี้ และรู้สึกประทับใจมากกับคุณภาพของผลงานที่ได้เข้าร่วมในงานนี้ ซึ่งมีศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงหลายๆท่านเข้าร่วมแสดงในงานนี้กันอย่างต่อเนื่อง ผมจึงเริ่มติดตามงานประกวดนี้ตั้งแต่นั้นมา และบอกกับตัวเองว่าวันนึง ถ้ามีโอกาส จะต้องไปดูผลงานที่เข้าประกวดในงานนี้ด้วยตาตัวเองให้ได้ และเมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ผ่านมา ความฝันของผมก็ได้เป็นจริงครับ :)

SCAHMS (Southern California Area Historical Miniatures Society) was formed in 1984 and this year was their 29th annual “California Show”. It was held on April 11&12 at La Quinta Inn & Suites in La Palma, California (around 35 minutes from Los Angeles).
This was my first time to attend with the competition outside of Thailand and I was really nervous because I never knew or met the SCHAMS members before. I arrived at the show around 9.00 am on Saturday, April 12. This year they had smaller area than their last show and didn't have any vendors as I saw on the previous years report. After I registered my works to the competition, it's time to look around and take the pictures of the entries :) It had around 180 pieces in this year and I was blew away by the quality of their works :) There was many great entries in the show and many of them came from the well-know artists such as Bill Horan, Young Won, Mike Good, Penny Meyer, Aaron Lovejoy and many more talented artists. It was a real pleasure and well worth seeing their works with my own eyes, really better than see it through the pictures online.

SCAHMS อ่านออกเสียงว่า สแคมส ย่อมาจาก (Southern California Area Historical Miniatures Society) ก่อตั้งขึ้นตั้งแต่ปี 1984 และปีนี้เป็นการจัดแสดงประจำปีครั้งที่ 29 ครับ ซึ่งเรียกชื่อกันติดปากว่า “California Show” ปีนี้งานถูกกำหนดในวันศุกร์ที่ 11 และเสาร์ที่ 12 เมษายน ที่โรงแรม La Quinta Inn & Suites ใน La Palma, California (ใช้เวลาเดินทางจาก Los Angeles ประมาณ 35 นาทีครับ)
นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ผมเข้าร่วมงานประกวดในต่างประเทศ และค่อนข้างจะตื่นเต้นและประหม่า เนื่องจากไม่เคยรู้จักหรือพบกับใครที่เป็นสามชิกของ SCHAMS มาก่อนครับ ผมถึงที่งานประมาณเก้าโมงเช้า  ของวันเสาร์ที่ 12 สถานที่จัดงานในปีนี้ดูเล็กกว่าปีก่อนๆและไม่มีบูธมาจำหน่ายสินค้าเหมือนกับที่ผมเคยเห็นจากภาพของงานปีก่อนๆ หลังจากที่ลงทะเบียนผลงานเสร็จเรียบร้อย ผมจึงมีโอกาสได้เดินดูและถ่ายรูปผลงานที่จัดแสดงและเข้าร่วมประกวด ปีนี้มีผลงานรวมทั้งหมดประมาณ 180 ชิ้น แต่คุณภาพของงานนั้นน่าประทับใจมากครับ ผลงานที่เข้าร่วมส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นฟิกเกอร์ทั้งฮิสทอริคัลและมิลิทารี่ และมียุทธยานยนต์และงานแนวไซไฟแฟนตาซีบ้างประปราย ซึ่งมีงานที่ดีมากๆหลายๆชิ้น และหลายชิ้นเป็นผลงานของศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงอย่างเช่น Bill Horan, Young Won, Mike Good, Penny Meyer, Aaron Lovejoy และอีกหลายๆท่านที่ผมไม่รู้จักชื่อ ผมรู้สึกว่ามันคุ้มค่ามากๆที่ได้เห็นผลงานเหล่านี้ด้วยตาของตัวเอง ซึ่งดีกว่าที่ได้มองผ่านทางรูปภาพบนจอคอมพิวเตอร์มากๆครับ

Also, around 11.00 am we moved from the show space to nearby seminar room to see the Slide Show Presentation "Animating 54mm Figures" by Bill Horan. This seminar took around 1 hour and it was really great to know his thought and how he sculpted his beautiful and realistic 54mm figures with step by step explanation. It was another well worth experience as well :)

นอกจากนี้ ในช่วงประมาณสิบเอ็ดโมงเช้า เราทุกคนได้ย้ายจากส่วนแสดงผลงานไปยังห้องสัมมนาที่อยู่ข้างๆกัน เพื่อดูการแสดงสไลด์โชว์ "Animating 54mm Figures" โดย Bill Horan ซึ่งการสัมมนานี้ใช้เวลาประมาณหนึ่งชั่วโมงครับ และรู้สึกว่าคุ้มค่ามากๆเช่นกัน กับการที่ได้เห็นบิลอธิบายถึงวิธีคิดและการปั้นผลงานของเขาแบบทีละขั้นตอน ซึ่งเขาให้ความสำคัญกับรายละเอียดบนชิ้นงานมากๆ และผลงานที่เสร็จออกมาก็ดูสมจริงมากๆด้วยครับ งานสัมมนานี้เป็นอีกสิ่งที่ทำให้รู้สึกว่าการมาครั้งนี้คุ้มค่ามากครับ :)

After the seminar, I had a chance to talk with some people in the show such as Penny Meyer, Lars Liljeblad and the others that I don't remember their names (so sorry) They was so nice and kind to a stranger like me, even I was not speak English so well. I also had a chance to meet with Aaron Lovejoy after Penny introduced me to him, because we have the same interest in miniatures wargame. He is a member of SCAHMS as well and really nice, friendly guy. I never met him before but I known his works and saw it from last year US Golden Demon report. We had talked for a while before the awards ceremony and he gave me some very useful advice about entering the works in the competition. Thank you so much Aaron :)

หลังจากการสัมมนา ผมได้มีโอกาสคุยกับหลายๆคนภายในงาน ทั้ง Penny Meyer, Lars Liljeblad และคนอื่นๆอีกที่ผมจำชื่อไม่ได้ ซึ่งพวกเขาดีต่อผมมากๆ แม้ว่าผมจะเป็นคนแปลกหน้าที่ไม่เคยพบกันมาก่อนและภาษาของผมนั้นยังไม่ดีนัก ผมยังมีโอกาสได้คุยกับ Aaron Lovejoy หลังจากที่ Penny ได้แนะนำให้เรารู้จักกัน เพราะเห็ว่าเราชอบในเรื่องของ miniatures wargame เหมือนๆกัน (เนื่องจากส่วนใหญ่ในงานเค้าจะทำกันแต่แนวทหารและนักรบโบราณกันทั้งนั้น) Aaron นั้นเป็นสมาชิกของ SCAHMS เช่นกันและนิสัยดีและเป็นมิตรมาก ผมไม่เคยพบเขามาก่อนแต่เคยเห็นผลงานของเขาที่ได้รับรางวัลจากงานประกวด US Golden Demon ของปีก่อนๆ เราได้พูดคุยกันซักพักระหว่างที่รอการประกาศรางวัล ซึ่งเขาเป็นคนพูดเก่งและชวนคุยอยู่ตลอด และยังแนะนำเกี่ยวกับการส่งงานประกวดในอเมริกาให้ผมด้วย ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์มากๆครับ :)

For this year competition, I brought 4 pieces of my works and entered in Advanced Painters Division/ Fantasy Figures. It was judged with Open Judging System, simple explanation of this system: They has team of three judges (preferably) The team examines each display in their assigned area, and selects one piece to evaluate with they feel represents the best work by that exhibitor, one which is likely to earn the highest award. If the judges agree that some or all entries in the display are of the same level, then they may choose to give an award to "the entire display". or part of the display. (for more details about Open Judging System, click HERE) After the awards ceremony, It turned out that I got gold medal for Capt'n Sapo, it was my honored and another real pleasure that I got from the show :D
Honestly, meeting with many talented artists which some of them are my hero and inspiration to me since I was a teenager, such as Bill Horan and Young Won. Just only seeing their works in real life was enough for made my day, but to get the medal made me feel more happy and it will be motivated myself to improve my works and make it better for the next year :)

ส่วนการประกวดในปีนี้ ผมนำผลงานมาเข้าร่วมทั้งหมด 4 ชิ้น และลงประกวดในรุ่น Advanced Painters Division/ Fantasy Figures และผลที่ได้นั้น ผมได้รางวัลเหรียญทองจาก Capt'n Sapo ซึ่งดีที่สุดในผลงานของผมจากทั้ง 4 ชิ้น (กติกาของการประกวดนี้จะเป็นการให้คะแนนแบบโอเพ่นครับ ซึ่งถ้าเราลงผลงานไว้ในประเภทเดียวกัน กรรมการจะเลือกตัดสินว่าชิ้นงานไหนที่ดีที่สุดของเรา และประกาศให้ชิ้นที่ดีที่สุดของเรานั้นได้รางวัลเพียงชิ้นเดียว แต่ถ้าผลงานของเราทุกชิ้นที่ลงในประเภทเดียวกันนั้น มีคุณภาพอยู่ในมาตราฐานเดียวกันทั้งหมด กรรมการก็จะประกาศให้รางวัลแก่การแสดงผลงานรวมทั้งหมดของเราครับ) ซึ่งผมรู้สึกเป็นเกียรติและยินดีมากๆที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้ อันที่จริงแล้ว การที่ได้มาพบกับศิลปินที่มีความสามารถหลายๆท่าน และบางคนในนั้นยังเป็นเหมือนฮีโร่และแรงบันดาลใจให้กับผมมาตั้งแต่สมัยเด็กๆ เช่น Bill Horan และ Young Won เพียงแค่ได้มาเห็นผลงานของสองท่านนี้แบบใกล้ๆ ก็ทำให้ผมรู้สึกประทับใจมากแล้วครับ แต่การที่ได้รางวัลกลับบ้านด้วยยิ่งทำให้ผมรู้สึกยินดีมากขึ้นไปอีก และมันจะเป็นแรงกระตุ้นให้ผมตั้งใจพัฒนาผลงานของตัวเอง และทำให้มันดียิ่งขึ้นในปีต่อๆไป

In my humble opinion, Even though this year they had a smaller space and less entries or participants on their show than other years, but I feel like it has had the warm and friendly atmosphere and I really like it. I didn't feel nervous anymore after I stayed there for a while, maybe because they looked friendly and everybody was ready to talk to you about our same precious hobby :) I would like to say even they are just small amount of people and came from many places, but they all love and dedicated in this hobby, you can see it through their works. I had a great experience and really impressed with my first attended show. Thank you so much to every SCAHMS staff and participants who made this show happened. I will definitely be there next year and I'm looking forward to see their works again.

ในความคิดของผม แม้ว่าการประกวดครั้งนี้จะมีพื้นที่แสดงงานที่เล็กกว่าเดิม หรือมีผลงานและผู้ที่เข้าร่วมน้อยกว่าปีก่อนๆ แต่ผมรู้สึกว่ามันมีบรรยากาศที่ดูอบอุ่นและเป็นกันเอง ซึ่งผมชอบความรู้สึกแบบนี้มากกว่า มันทำให้ผมไม่รู้สึกประหม่าอีกต่อไปหลังจากที่ได้อยู่ภายในงานไปซักพัก อาจจะเป็นเพราะทุกๆคนนั้นดูเป็นมิตรและดูเหมือนทุกคนพร้อมที่จะคุยกับคุณในเรื่องของงานอดิเรกที่เราชอบเหมือนๆกัน ผมคงจะพูดได้ว่า แม้จะเป็นจำนวนคนเพียงไม่กี่คน และมาจากหลากหลายพื้นที่ แต่ทุกๆคนนั้นรักและทุ่มเทให้กับงานอดิเรกประเภทนี้ ซึ่งคุณจะเห็นได้ผ่านทางผลงานของพวกเขา ผมได้รับประสบการณ์ที่ดีและรู้สึกประทับใจมากๆจากการร่วมประกวดเป็นครั้งแรก ขอบคุณผู้ที่มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับการจัดงานทุกๆท่าน ทั้งสตาฟและผู้เข้าร่วมประกวด  ที่ทำให้งานนี้เกิดขึ้นได้ ในครั้งต่อไปผมคงจะไปร่วมด้วยอีกแน่นอน และรอคอยที่จะได้เห็นผลงานของทุกๆคนอีก เมื่อวันนั้นมาถึง คงจะได้กลับมารายงานให้ชมกันอีกครั้งครับ
