Casualties of War (part 5)

For making a pile of debris, I started with preparing all elements I need to put on the base such as bricks, stones, wood strips, etc. The bricks were made from plaster and painted with GSI color, these are leftovers from my previous vignette project. All of the wood elements were made from balsa wood and painted in different colors to simulate the appearance of old wood.
After everything was ready, I used white glue diluted with water and mixed with smashed brick (try to smash it into tiny pieces as much as possible). I then applied the mixture onto the pile (made from plaster) with a paintbrush. This mixture will be covered the plaster surface and make it look like a natural pile of debris. I also added some bricks, wood beams, etc., on some areas while I applied the mixture on the base in order to make it has a variety of materials that collapsed from the building.

This method took some time to finish but do not worry because the mixture of white glue, water and bricks will take several hours before it starts to dry. Therefore you have plenty of time to adjust the shape or position of the brick. I applied the mixture and everything onto the base back and forth until it was completely covered and could not see the black surface. I also sprinkled dry smashed brick onto the wet mixture on some areas to create more textures. If some areas overflow with white glue, it will leave the glue stains when it dries, use a tissue to absorb the excess white glue.

Once I satisfied with the position of every elements, I left the base to dry at least for eight hours. When the base is completely dry, the white glue will be strong enough to hold everything in place unless you force to break it. It also does not have any glue stains but look quite satin finish because they all covered with a very thin layer of white glue.

You can see it still needs some touch up because the color of the brick is not match with the building. If I have various colors of smashed brick and use the same color for painting bricks on the building and individual bricks made from plaster, perhaps it will be finished without any touch up.

Casualties of War (part 4)

I have finished weathering on the building and pavement. I used the weathering products from Ammo of MIG such as enamels and pigments to create grime, stains, rainmarks and dust on the building and base. I am sorry I forgot to take a photo during this stage but I think you can find many good tutorials for these methods nowadays. I recommend you check out AMMO OF MIG JIMENEZ channel on YouTube [HERE]. They have many video tutorials explaining how to use their products. I assure you it will be a lot better than my explanation. :)

The last image is an animated GIF so you can see the different before and after weathering.

Casualties of War (part 3)

Door/window frames and the remain of the second floor were made from various thickness of balsa wood. Even though it has just a little space to show the details inside of the building, I think it is good to add something on the wall so it will help to convey the story of the scene rather than leave this area as a blank space.
I chose to paint the wooden areas with dark color (various shades of Grey and Brown) in order to make them contrast with the white wall.

Casualties of War (part 2)

As I mentioned in the first part, I started this project a few years ago and it was left on the shelf after I primed the whole base with Black from GSI color and sprayed on the building wall with Light Orange. When I brought this project back to finish, I had to sand the Light Orange area with 400-600 grit sandpaper first. Because the surface of GSI color quite a bit semi-gloss, water-based paints like Vallejo will not hold very well on this surface. I also decided to start over with the painting because it was quite difficult to mix a match color for that old Light Orange, also the blending will be easier on the same type of color.

I used Vallejo 70981 Orange Brown mixed with White for the building wall. The bricks were painted with various shades of Orange and Brown, mixed from Panzer Aces 301 Light Rust, Panzer Aces 302 Dark Rust, 70981 Orange Brown, 70982 Cavalry Brown, 70984 Flat Brown. The stone details on the building and pavement were painted with the colors mixed from 70995 German Grey, Black and White. You can see all of the colors quite a bit bright at the moment but it will be toned down after weathering.
